Ice and snow reduce traction dramatically, and steep alpine access roads leave little margin for error. Tracked machines with appropriate grousers may handle icy ground better than wheeled units, and wheeled plant may need chains fitted to comply with road rules and site requirements in alpine areas during snow season. Discuss whether the supplier can provide chains, how they are fitted and whether operators are trained in their use.

Snow clearing itself may form part of the scope, using graders, loaders with snow blades or dedicated clearing equipment. Where it does not, confirm who is responsible for clearing access and how the program will respond if heavy snowfall closes the site. The Bureau of Meteorology issues warnings for snow, blizzards and severe weather, and these should be part of daily prestart planning during the season.

Winter days are short, and in steep, shaded terrain usable light may be even shorter. Lighting towers extend productive time, but position them to avoid glare into operators' eyes and onto public roads. LED towers are generally more fuel efficient and may run for longer between refuelling. Consider hybrid or battery units where noise matters, such as near alpine villages or accommodation. Cold also shortens battery runtime, so ask the supplier how a battery tower performs at low temperatures and whether it can be topped up by a generator overnight.

Cold also affects how operators perform. Fine motor control and alertness drop as people cool down, and slips on icy steps are a real risk.
