01 / Heat stress and operator welfare

Machines can start fires. Hot exhaust components, sparks from ground engaging tools striking rock, electrical faults and accumulated vegetation around engines are all known ignition sources. Under the Australian Fire Danger Rating System, fire authorities issue daily ratings and may declare total fire bans. Some activities, such as hot work and certain machinery use in grass or scrub, can be restricted on high fire danger or total fire ban days, and the rules differ between states and territories. Check what applies to your location.

Practical controls include keeping engine bays and belly pans clear of dry vegetation, fitting spark arrestors where required, carrying a suitable fire extinguisher on each machine and, on higher risk sites, a water cart or fire-fighting unit on standby. Ask suppliers whether their machines for rural or vegetated sites are fitted with fire suppression systems, and make sure operators know what to do if a fire starts.

03 / Cooling systems, tyres and hydraulics

Summer tests every cooling system. Radiators, charge air coolers and hydraulic oil coolers packed with dust, grass seed or insects cannot shed heat, and machines will derate or shut down. Ask whether units have reversing fans or easily accessible cores, and include daily core inspection and blow-down in the prestart routine. Coolant condition and concentration should be checked by the supplier before dispatch, not assumed.

Hot road surfaces and long haul cycles raise tyre temperatures and pressures. Rubber tyres on wheeled loaders, graders and articulated trucks should be checked cold each morning and monitored through the day. Hydraulic systems also run hotter, which can accelerate wear on hoses and seals. Ask the supplier whether any service intervals should be shortened during extreme heat, and record any temperature warnings reported by operators.

Dry summer ground generates dust quickly, and hot winds carry it further. Plan water carts for haul roads and work areas, and check that the supply can keep up as evaporation increases. On sites near homes or public roads, dust complaints are a common trigger for regulator attention, so suppression should be planned rather than reactive. Cab filtration and seals protect operators from the dust as well as the heat.

Summer also brings the Christmas and New Year break, when many suppliers, transport operators and parts distributors reduce staffing. If plant needs to be delivered, collected or serviced during that period, arrange it well in advance. Ask the supplier how breakdowns will be handled over the shutdown and whether the hire rate continues while the site is closed. Securing idle machines over the break is also worth planning.

Hire agreements rarely address heat directly, but they do cover minimum hours, standby and breakdowns. If work stops for extreme heat or a total fire ban, find out whether the day is charged at full rate, standby rate or not at all. If a machine overheats repeatedly, ask whether the supplier will replace it. Clarity at the start avoids arguments in the middle of a heatwave. Record heat-related stoppages on daily dockets with the reason and time.

Useful questions for suppliers include: when was the air conditioning last serviced, is the cooling system clean and the coolant current, is a fire extinguisher fitted and in date, are machines for vegetated sites fitted with fire suppression, and what support is available over the holiday period?
